Chapter 18 - Industry Affairs, ICA and my Board Career takes off
President and Reforming ICA
As the Chief Executive of NWIA, I was automatically the Controlling Officer of the company for ICA purposes. NWIA was a member of ICA at the time. So I immediately
started to receive all those Controlling Officer circulars and General circulars that poured out of ICA in those days; most of which were of a technical nature.
Two years after arriving in Australia here was I, the new kid on the block, joining the Board of ICA. By 1986 I had become President.
It was one of my greatest achievements of this period of my career to reform and modernise the industry body and to completely refocus its aims.
ICA was established on 1 July 1975 succeeding the Council of the Fire, Accident and Marine Underwriters of the Commonwealth of Australia and the various State Underwriting Associations which traced their origins back to 1869.
ICA was established to act as the peak body for the general insurance companies in Australia licensed under the Insurance Act 1973. (This particularly meant that Government Insurance Offices and Intermediaries could not join).
ICA comprised of member groups including insurance and reinsurance companies and Lloyds. In my time, they would have accounted for more than 90% of all insurance business transacted in Australia by authorised insurers.
To me ICA reflected the industry itself: traditional in its outlook,
