CHAPTER 18 - INDUSTRY AFFAIRS, ICA AND MY BOARD CAREER TAKES OFF
• To enhance service standards across the industry sector and promote appropriate self-regulation.
• To promote private sector provisions of insurance services; and
• To effectively and efficiently manage ICA’s resources.
In a nutshell, this meant the Council would concentrate on:
• Lobby
• Public Relations and • Forum
To give you an idea, some of the functions that ICA undertook in those days are which we divested ourselves of included:
• Running the industry claims database. This we eventually sold into a new company in conjunction with the Credit Reference Association of Australia, which today is Insurance Reference Services.
• ICA had a team of surveyors who conducted sprinkler inspections of insured properties.
• ICA controlled the appointment of loss adjusters and the payment of loss adjusters in natural disasters.
• Printing for the industry including regulation, Marine Clauses etc.
The reforms were adopted and ICA changed for the better. The foundations we put in place then still hold true today.
Thus ended my year as President of ICA, but this was not to be my last involvement.
