CHAPTER 18 - INDUSTRY AFFAIRS, ICA AND MY BOARD CAREER TAKES OFF
reactive and providing a range of products and services to the members which were a hangover from the days of the tariff.
With support from the Board, we established a Review Committee Chaired by Harold Levick of GRE as Vice President and commissioned external consultants to conduct the review. The Review involved interviews of the staff to understand the current operations and functions of ICA, external market research with State and Federal governments, the media, other employer bodies and other insurance bodies. Importantly it included internal research amongst all ICA members.
The consultants summarised their understanding of the challenges facing ICA, which were not a lack of membership (ICA had in excess of 100 members then) but a lack of focus, which affected its structure and costs. They reported that it was generally a reactive organisation, that it was not well-positioned to assist the industry in facing the many important issues which were on the horizon.
They were given a mandate to consider the strategy that had been developed by the Board which said that in the future ICA should concentrate on the following objectives:
• To act as a peak consultative and co-ordinating body for the insurance sector in Australia, representing members interests domestically and internationally.
• To represent the insurance industry in all matters involving contact with Governments at all levels.
• To develop and co-ordinate the insurance sector’s response to the changing needs to consumers and the community generally.
• To enhance the industry’s image through positive media relations.
• To create community awareness of the role and benefit of insurance.
