to get the Treasurer to the round table meeting. The answer is simple. We paid Essendon Football Club an agreed figure and then engaged Peter Costello, who was the club’s number one member. I thought it was very clever and added a lot of prestige to not only ICA but also to Concord.
The Adlers
At ICA’s Annual Dinners we would invite the Governor General of Australia or other persons of note. On this occasion in 1987, it was Sir Ninian Stephen. He was sitting next to me, as I was then the President, and he asked whether he could meet Larry Adler of FAI Insurance as he had heard so much about him.
As Larry was my Vice President I arranged for us to swap places after the break so he could speak to Larry. Anyway, after the break he came back to me and said there was no need to change because he was in the gents and standing next to Larry who told him his life story in a matter of about four or five minutes. Larry as we all know was quite a well-known character, in that he drove taxis and eventually ended up owning FAI Insurance, which unfortunately in the long run was a contributory factor in the downfall of HIH.
Having said this, Larry had a wonderful way with the politicians, both Coalition and Labor and I gather that this stemmed from
