I couldn’t believe the comment but on the other hand, this is what happened and I never had a problem in getting in touch with anyone high up in Government. His son Rodney eventually took over FAI Insurance and was on the Board of ICA and, somewhat controversially, President after I retired.
At the time when we were running the major industry image advertising campaign selling the positives about insurance. “ insurance puts things back together again “ was the slogan. FAI came up with an advert which sought to promote FAI by denigrating everyone else’s claims attitudes. I went to see Rodney and asked him to withdraw his advert which he refused to do. The then President of the ICA was Phillip Clairs of CGU and he and I decided that unless he withdrew the advert, we would see that his membership of ICA be cancelled. Rodney tested Phillip and my resolve. However, before we held the Board meeting in Canberra, at the last minute, Rodney apologised and withdrew the advertisement.
