CHAPTER 7 - MY PARTNER DAPHNE
posted to just about every Branch within the L&G Group in South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe and became the equivalent of the Banks’ Relief Manager, Daphne and I have had the privilege of living or renting some 30 odd homes in Africa alone.
We lived on the principal that home was where you are, but I must admit we carted our furniture with us and in some of the homes we lived, we could not furnish them because they were too large and in others we had to place some of our furniture in storage. By the way, most of our furniture we have today has been with us since we got married. In my pedantic way, they are in just the same condition as they were when we first bought the furniture.
Daphne has always been a great supporter and when it came to moving around, never did she complain except when I was asked to consider moving to Norwich in the UK to take up the role of the General Manager of International Business. I did not say no, but Daphne and I pitched up there and it was snowing and I even found my shoes were gathering mildew. After negotiations with the powers that be, I was very hesitant about moving to Norwich. This was the first time I ever turned down anything and endeavoured to try and persuade Norwich and Winterthur, which are separate companies, that the Centre should be in Australia, which never happened.
I am often asked what makes a good marriage and must say that it’s very difficult to answer that question, particularly as I have a saying which is “be reasonable and do it my way” and I can assure you Daphne, while coming across as a quiet person also wants her own way. But, we have never had to reach a stalemate.
I couldn’t imagine being without her. Some years ago, I decided that I should have a special hairdo and it is possibly something I have always regretted as I became obsessed with the way my hair was done. Without Daphne, there was little chance I could maintain my hair. So, she today continues to spread a few strings across the top of my head, but believe it or not, the hair on the side continues to
