CHAPTER 7 - MY PARTNER DAPHNE
grow so I might now adopt Donald Trump’s hairstyle.
However, I never answered what made a good marriage, but at the end of the day, if I was analysing marriage I think it could be covered by two words and those are “mutual respect”. I think all of us as we go through life have things we like and dislike or alternatively as I put it “a number of kinks”. Well I am no exception and neither is Daphne, so we just let those things be taken as read and get on with life.
I am somewhat of a workaholic. One thing I liked about my lifestyle, is that I got up early every morning and went to work early, because I can’t stand sitting in a car in the traffic, and came home at about 4.00pm or 4.30pm in the evening, again to miss the traffic. Daphne has never every interfered in my working habits and if anything, she is only happy to encourage me in doing what I like to do because this makes me happy and I suppose it makes for a happy marriage.
The other big thing in our lives is I have never ever brought home problems and discussed them with Daphne. I leave the problems at office or as I say “with myself” and the last thing I would want to do is to be discussing problems while I am at home. I’d rather get on with the job and carry the burden.
This does not mean she is not involved, quite to the contrary. In our life, she has been there to provide entertainment for numerous visitors from over the world, with some of whom we have made great friends. During my time as CEO Daphne also had to manage all the office parties, which were always at my home.
My message to young married people is; don’t forget the motto “treat each other with great respect and acknowledge the hard work each of us do”. In the case of Daphne, we could not exist if it wasn’t for her looking after the children and grandchildren and becoming the chauffeur and the housekeeper and the provider when it comes to (I’m not going to say it). I hope our life continues for many years to come.
