CHAPTER 8 - THE INSURANCE AND SPORTING FAMILY
I remember when one of our relations who was recently married brought along her husband to meet the family. He was dressed to the nines. But after a game of what was supposed to be touch rugby and in which he landed in a few bushes and I am sure his suit needed dry cleaning. This was not an isolated occasion because we all took some delight in giving visitors a hard time. By the way, I cannot remember ever seeing the newlyweds again.
Christmas and New Year were no exception. We would always end up playing sport. I used to practice so that I could at least hold my own. If we were playing tennis I would bring along my own tennis partner who had great ability, so I had a good chance of winning. I recall visiting Cape Town once with one of my tennis partners. Michael organised us to play tennis at Newlands Cricket Ground but he had fixed it so that we had to play the Western Province Champion, who at the end of the day gave us a tennis lesson!
Most of the family ended up playing golf which was not my best sport. However if they gave me two shots a hole I could hold my own but as time went on they gave me a handicap. (One of my friends reminds me how my ball always seemed to land on a tee!) Those matches were just something to behold because they were keenly contested. Today when the Aussie Daly’s and their friends get together with the South African Daly’s and their friends they play for the Mandela Cup.
