CHAPTER 8 - THE INSURANCE AND SPORTING FAMILY
guard because I used to drop Debbie off on the way to work every morning and I am told he would be waiting to entertain her to coffee.
Paul
A couple of stories about Paul: coming from South Africa we were not used to people, especially young people, addressing us by our Christian names. When Debbie arranged for me to meet this young fellow who was selling TV’s in Maxwells stores, the first thing he said was “Hi Peter”. I thought this was over the top!
I did eventually get used to the Aussie habit of using first names, even in business. Even worse was the habit of abbreviating everything.
Another story at Paul’s expense: having dinner with a few friends at a top restaurant in Toorak Paul ordered “steak tartare”. In turn the waiter asked how he would like it and Paul said “well-done”. At which the waiter said he only wanted to know what accompaniments Paul wanted with it.
Paul and I have always enjoyed ribbing each other. Having said this, I have a lot of admiration for Paul. He is not any different to the Daly’s: totally committed and works exceptionally hard. Paul has helped many of his extended family to get a start in life by providing them with opportunities to work for the company. However, like a true person who has made his own success in life, he pays no favours whether they are family or friends.
Strange as it may seem, while we were all involved in the insurance industry in one way or another we never discussed the insurance market or what we were doing or what had happened when we got together. However, the Daly’s could just not meet and sit around talking, they had to be doing something so when we did get together it was outside playing cricket, tennis or touch rugby, which was on some occasions a bit rough.
