CHAPTER 8 - THE INSURANCE AND SPORTING FAMILY
Sheelagh also played hockey at the highest level and it was at one of her games when she was playing with Janice Mason that Pop was removed from the ground for disagreeing with the umpire!
Her claim to fame is that she was a backstroke swimmer and swam for Transvaal. It was Sheelagh who caused Pop to leave the swimming pool as he maintained others were cheating by not touching the wall correctly and that did not meet the rules. By the way, Pop did swim competitively but I don’t know as to what level but presumably, like his cricket and rugby, it would have been at a high standard.
Michael
Michael as I alluded to when introducing Don, was Don’s partner in their Broking company in Cape Town. Michael being the youngest in the family took a different approach in many ways to the traditional methods of underwriting. He and Don worked extremely well together, especially in the area of mutual funding contracts. Michael also enjoyed playing hard when it came to sport and was involved in cricket, but also in golf. In the latter years,
Daphne and I spent some time with Michael and we were indeed impressed with his interest in the environment and conservation which is an area where I have been heavily involved. He knew much about the subject and was well noted for his cheetah breeding and his love for wild animals. One of his claims to fame was his shooting ability and he won a number of competitions.
