CHAPTER 8 - THE INSURANCE AND SPORTING FAMILY
playing cricket and did not survive. This was shortly after his marriage. Something similar happened with the second eldest Craig while playing hockey but he was fortunate in that some of those who were playing with him realised the seriousness and he recovered.
Kevin
Kevin, my second youngest brother, was the Managing Director of the Sage Group in Johannesburg and his son who shares the same name, joined the company.
Kevin was more in my league, although he won’t like me saying so. He was a fast bowler and took many wickets. He batted left handed and was very hard to get out and on one occasion he refused to walk after the
umpire had given him out and as I was Captain, I had to eventually convince him whether he hit the ball or not, he was still out. Whatever Kevin played he was a team player. In addition to cricket he played hockey and golf.
Even up to the time of writing, those that played cricket with him are now playing golf. One of the things about his golf is that he is left handed but plays left handed with right handed clubs and in the early days he had a handicap under 10.
His wife Colleen has been a great support to Kevin in his working life and particularly in the area of home entertaining. Besides this, Colleen and Kevin are passionate golfers and supporters of their golf club. The Daly’s enjoy getting together and most Sundays Kevin and Colleen’s home is the place to be, not only for the notable BBQ but also the team games that follow. I might add all of us who have the opportunity to visit Johannesburg, recognise Kevin and Colleen for their hospitality.
