CHAPTER 8 - THE INSURANCE AND SPORTING FAMILY
Don was the ultimate professional when it came to sport. He played cricket for Western Province and Transvaal and he was noted for his amazing skills behind the wicket. In gaining selection for Western Province, he was the only person from Marist Brothers to make the team and it was through his wicket keeping he gained selection. Not to be outdone, he also played first league rugby as scrum half and always challenged Dad when it came to long distance running, although Pop would beat him through sheer stamina.
Don and Michael also competed in yacht racing and entered their own yacht in the Cape to Rio yacht race.
On one of my birthdays when Don was present, he spoke about the innings we once shared. Believe it or not the team was nine wickets down and we needed to survive in order to win the trophy. We must have batted together for something like two hours and the match was a draw. Needless to say, my contribution towards the runs was negligible and I was eventually criticised in the write-up of the match where the reporter made reference to “the art of cricket is to make runs!”.
Patricia, known as Pat
Pat my eldest sister worked for Aetna Insurance in Johannesburg and then subsequently in Australia was with various Insurers and Brokers. Her husband Stan started his career in CapeTown at Norwich Union and also worked for British Traders. He then specialised in aviation loss adjusting, setting up a company known as S L Spanner & Co. in CapeTown. On immigrating to Australia, he set up a loss
adjusting firm in Sydney and subsequently joined the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) as Code of Practice Manager.
Pat could hold her own on the sporting field, having played top hockey and she didn’t have red hair for nothing because she was
