CHAPTER 8 - THE INSURANCE AND SPORTING FAMILY
treatment of blacks and used to go around speaking about fairness to the wider community. He had a lot of interesting experiences, particularly in certain areas of South African where many white people did not appreciate his sentiments. Even though he sought selection to Parliament in South Africa and was defeated, he never lost his interest in politics.
Pop had a unique way of relating sport to business and would lecture us on our weekend performances, being particularly hard on Don, the eldest, but not necessarily me because I think he gave me up as a sporting tragedy. However, he always admired my ability to seek leadership which in my own way I thought was the greatest contribution I made to sport.
I captained just about every team I have ever played in and this included both rugby and cricket as well as taking tours overseas. I would always say I would retire long before I would reach Pop’s age, but look what has happened, I have now exceeded his retirement age and have been in insurance for 65 years. This is a nice way of saying I am in my 80s.
David Donald, known as Don
Don was the eldest in the family; unfortunately he is no longer with us, having passed away. At the time of his death he was working on a new project -- typical Don!. He had a great knowledge of the industry and was always developing unique products, particularly in the area of self-funding contracts. In South Africa he underwrote the South African Railways and many of the taxi services accounts.
If there was a big risk, Don would be involved. He and Michael, the youngest member of the family, owned a company known as Daly & Associates in CapeTown. Michael is still in insurance broking with RMS Insurance Brokers. Like her father, one of his daughters is also involved with Michael at RMS Insurance Brokers.
