CHAPTER 8 - THE INSURANCE AND SPORTING FAMILY
Pop Daly
Pop Daly was an amazing character. He was chairman of a number of sporting bodies, and twice sought selection to represent the United Party in Parliament (but he was defeated). He was extremely competitive and he liked to win.
He had high expectations of all of us children whether at sport, which was his passion, or in business. This didn’t make life easy for us all at home. He drove us hard, was never satisfied with the results and was always short on compliments.
Pop watched every game we played and analysed it in detail afterwards and would tell you what you had done wrong, even if you had scored a century at cricket. It didn’t stop there; he would phone friends or other team members as well with his post-match analysis. His passion continued following us at sport long after we had grown up.
Of course, there was only one team – the one the Daly was playing in and he would vociferously express his opinion about opponents and umpire or referees’ decisions. We have all seen him removed or banned from the touchline or the swimming pool. As you might guess, at the heart of it all, he was incredibly proud and supportive of all of us.
Pop spent a lifetime in the industry and after retiring as General Manager of the Dominion Insurance Company of SA in December 1969, he joined C F Lawson and Co Insurance Brokers which subsequently became Nedsual Insurance Brokers and later Minets. Pop decided to retire after 60 years in the insurance industry at the ripe old age of 80.
Pop’s career was interesting. He started in insurance in Port Elizabeth (PE) with the London and Lancashire and Law Union and Rock. After five years, he left P.E. to join the Head Office of the Provincial in Cape Town. Then, after six years with Provincial,
