3 May Elaine P. Gwen was born in Bowral. Her father was a station master in the
country, so as a child Gwen moved from town to town and attended
7 May Sergio C. many schools. This also meant that Gwen was lucky enough see many
9 May Olive J. famous people like the Duke and Duchess of York who travelled by train
when doing their tours of the Commonwealth countries. When she
10 May Norma F. finished school she attended a typing a school and became skilled at
short-hand typing and started working in Narrabri.

Gwen decided to move to Concord, Sydney and began work as a Nurses
Aid at Concord Hospital. She was a Nurses Aid for six years and met her

beloved husband Stanley whilst there. Stanley was a member of the
13th Battalion, one of the Rats of Tobruk who were continuously in

action throughout 1941 in campaigns fought in the Middle East and the
Mediterranean. Gwen fondly recalls that they met in the hospital when
he returned as a wounded soldier (he was the one who noticed her first
and then made the first move!). After the war in 1947, they married.
Once they got back they settled down and lived in Miranda where they
had their two children, Dawn and Diane and then resided in Greenacre
where they remained for 64 years. Stanley trained to be a brilliant watch
maker and opened up a watch repair shop in George Street, Sydney.
Gwen worked for Stanley taking messages and helped him with his work.

Gwen said they lived an ordinary life and enjoyed family time, picnics
and going to the beach. Gwen now has five grandchildren, two great
grandchildren and one great-great grandchild all of whom she loves very
much. Gwen moved to Bayswater Gardens in April 2017 and has
featured in our marketing campaigns. She jokes that the modelling job
didn’t even get someone asking her for her autograph!
