Meet a Resident
Jocelyn Andrea Devine
Joycelyn (Joy) Andrea Devine (Pedersen) was born
25th November 1923 at Nurse Dawson’s private
hospital at Dulwich Hill in NSW. Joy lived at
Cleveland Street in Surry Hills until she was 3 years
old then moved to Pile Street Dulwich Hill in 1926.
Jocelyn had a very loving family comprising of Dad
(Iver), Mum (Dorothy), older sister and younger
brother – Valerie and Iver Thomas.
Joyce left school around 15 years of age after which
she attended Miss Hales Business College where
she learnt secretarial work. Joyce worked for The
Federation Insurance Company.
Joyce met Edward (Ted) James Devine at the local
Catholic Church dance. Ted (22) and Joy (21) were
married on the 23rd December 1944 after the
wedding they lived with Ted’s parents before
moving into a flat of their own.
Joy and Ted went on to have 4 children Peter
Edward born in 1947, Therese Andres 1949,
Stephen Domonic 1954 and Bernard Damien 1961.
Joy has 10 grandchildren and 14 great
grandchildren.
Ted worked for the Commonwealth Public Service
required the family to move to Canberra where
they lived from 1956 to 2020.
Joy travelled to many countries around the world
For The Diary with her daughter Terry. “Ted didn’t like flying.” Joy
and Terry travelled around Europe, to the North
Date Event Pole, Antarctica and river cruising down the Danube
River. Joys favorite being Prague in Czech Republic.
