John and not Sir Carrick. I apologised and agreed.

eyes and warm smile. I left them both reciting poetry to each other

John and Angela met at the Bellevue Tennis Club in 1948. John was 30
and had survived four years in Japanese POW camps. Angela was 21
November and had experienced a unique childhood growing up in the rugged
2 Nov Charlotte L wilds of Papua New Guinea. Romance bloomed and in 1951 Angela
7 Nov Gwendoline S agreed to John’s marriage proposal as long as they could have three
girls. John felt that he had a good chance of meeting Angela’s

aspirations since he came from a female dominated family and so the
20 Nov Kenneth N wonderful adventure was given wings.

They honeymooned on Magnetic Island and returned home to their
intensely busy schedules. At the time, John was the General Secretary
for the Liberal Party. He would go on to become the Federal Minister
for Education and champion historic political initiatives. He rigorously contributed to government, university and
educational institutions and has been greatly respected and formally recognised for the extraordinary contribution that
he has made to Australian politics and public life. This never comes up during discussions. Instead, he shares fascinating
stories about his family and the friends he met along his journey, never uttering a word about his remarkable career.
Angela gifted in so many ways was equally energetic and deeply interested in politics and community affairs. She was
appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia and tirelessly contributed to a variety of key positions including Chief
Commissioner for Guides Australia.
Over the years, their greatest joy came in the form of their family and they delighted in the birth of three beautiful
daughters, Diane, Jane and Fiona.During their lifetime, they had only shared one holiday together at Norfolk Island
which was cut short as John was urgently called back to Australia.
John and Angela have given generously of themselves during their lifetime and they are happiest when sharing stories
about love, friendship and their family.
They are very romantic and can often be heard singing together or reciting poetry. I leave you with one of their favourite
poems to contemplate on the next page.
