there are gates that lead to heaven

and gates that go straight to hell.
there are gates that are welcoming

and gates that unmistakably repel.

whatever you think of them, there is no debate.
everybody’s tempted to go through a gate.

there are gates that open in
and gates that open out.

there are gates that creak and whisper

and gates that outright shout.
whatever you’re expecting,

it’s really not too late

to put your bravado in your pocket
and not go through that gate.

the gate shuts behind you.

the path lies ahead.

the garden is abuzz
with scents fragranting your head.

whatever sense you make of it
is yours to reject, not take.

and, yes, the exit is just an entrance

through another beguiling gate.
