short update from Tim McVey (Ldr 73). He is enjoying retirement and spends much of his time with the Walking Newtown group, either walking on or working on the footpaths around his local town of Newtown. He and his wife continue to expand their scope of ever- increasing travel; this year they ventured to Ecuador, the Galapagos and the Central Asian ‘Stans by rail. Tim sees a lot of his daughter, Hannah McVey (Sn 04),and his granddaughter, Hester, who are living on a narrow boat at Earith. Apparently, there are plans to buy a wide-beam boat, so Tim has been busy tidying up the narrow boat ready for sale.
Steven Thomas (G 69) shared some very happy and important news – that he married his partner, Judy, in August and that three OOs and their wives were in attendance. On a far more mundane but still very successful note, his shooting continues to yield some success, as he won a couple of trophies at the South African Championships in March and in June won the Scottish Championship and Grand Aggregate, repeating a result that he first achieved 38 years ago!
Still from the 60s,Paul Eadie (Sn 61)
Abi Carter (K 01)
was kind enough to supply me with a brief update. He claims to be “virtually” retired. However, he spends most of his time driving between Crouch End in London and Oswestry, trying to marshall builders to finish putting his house back together, after it burned down in 2014. This year saw the birth of his 13th grandchild and last year his fourth great- grandchild. In case that didn’t keep him busy enough physically, he has also decided to keep his brain active and has become a school governor at one of his granddaughters’ primary schools in North London.
Fellow 1961 leaver Jim Hindmarsh (Ldr 61)tells me he has become a Friend of Saint Augustine’s Church in Penarth, but assures me this is of no religious significance and is simply because he enjoys belonging to the churchyard working party.
The last news from the 60s came from Julian Smith (C 60).He writes: “The news in The Times of 20th July about Peter Pugh’s (G 62) miraculous escape from the Brancaster Marshes prompts me to recount some facts about long-standing Oundle-Overstone marriages. Peter is married to Felicity
