Oundle players made it to the first tee in good order on the Saturday morning (suitably refreshed for the fray), whereupon one of the Lancing pairs was unable to compete, giving us a very good, if somewhat frustrating, early advantage.
An unfortunate incident levelled the playing field, when Michael Beamish, preparing to drive on the fifth, was struck by a wide down the leg side from the fourth tee, hit by none other than his brother, David. The contact was just above the left eye, fortunately after a bounce, and whilst Michael soldiered on phlegmatically, striping his drive up the middle of the fifth fairway, it was clear that the combination of the shock, the bleeding and slightly blurred vision meant that discretion was the better part of valour and his partner (Doctor Duncan Smith) kindly accompanied him to the local hospital to be checked over and stitched up.
So, 1-1 and all depended on match two, with Beamish D and Edwards playing excellent golf to be four up after 14. Oundle had the better drive at the excellent short 15th and followed it up with a fabulous long putt by Beamish from just short of the green. However, another infamous turnover by Lancing, holing from 25 feet, took the match on to the 16th and another Beamish putt (with long-handled but unanchored weaponry) from the front edge was close enough to give Oundle the single point we needed to win a surprisingly eventful match 2-1.
Recognising that Michael Beamish and Smith might not return in time for the final, Pentecost advised Forest that we would be one pair short and that they should rearrange their team accordingly, insisting that Forest put up their strongest two pairs to ensure a true and fair contest of the highest order.
Pentecost and Copestick went out against their captain and an extremely talented Devon senior, with Beamish D and Edwards in trap two. It was a cracking encounter.
Pair two had levelled the score with a good win and the top match came to the 18th one down in a titanic battle. Two great drives, with Oundle arguably the better off, gave hope, but there followed a scorching second from the Devon Senior into the middle of the green and Oundle’s hopes were sadly dashed.
Michael Beamish and Smith returned from A&E just in time to witness the denouement, but our defeat was brought into perspective by the relief that Michael was signed off with a clean bill of health and would be able to return to Scotland the next day, battered but unbowed. They often say that golf is a game of small margins and that was certainly the case - an inch either way...

2017 GRAFTON MORRISH FINALS
By Bomber Harris (Lx 91)
Oundle disappointed at the Grafton Morrish Finals at Hunstanton & Royal West Norfolk last September, losing 3-0 in the first round to Cranleigh in unlucky fashion.
All three matches finished one down up the 18th in the first tie out on the Friday morning.
Whilst the golf may have been disappointing, a good time was had by all. Being knocked out by 11am is very dangerous (Brancaster ran out of their excellent club claret!) and resulted in an excellent beer match.
Results:
1st rd v Cranleigh L 0-3: S Carr (Sn 84) & R Harris L 1dn, A Lightowler (LS 97) & N Whalley (C 96) L 1dn, R Pentecost (St A 05) & P Pentecost (St A 73) L 1dn.
The team put up a sterling performance in the plate on the Saturday morning, considering the hangovers!
Results:
S Carr & R Pentecost 31pts, A Lightowler & R Harris 30, N Whalley & J Aston (St A 92) 18.
