2017 THE DICK WATSON TROPHY
By Cavan Browne (C 66)
For the second year running Oundle entered a team in this most enjoyable October weekend golfing event, The Dick Watson Trophy, at Aldeburgh.
Relatively new to the OOGS, The Dick Watson Trophy consists of 16 schools playing 36 holes of foursomes Stableford off handicap on the Saturday, with all four scores to count, and matchplay on the Sunday.
The 2017 OOGS team comprised Cavan Browne, John Linton (C 62), Nick Owles (N 63) and Joss Cheatle (G 00). Results to date have not lived up to usual OOGS standards,
but an improvement is anticipated for 2018.
2018 OOGS SOUTHERN MEETING
By Ed Dove (C 85)
The 2018 OOGS Southern Meeting was held at Walton Heath in March. As has become the tradition in this fixture, we had a full mix of handicap and age.
The morning foursomes (Negretti Cigar Box) on the New Course was won by Peter Edwards (Sc 73) and Henry Fray (G 08) on countback from David Simons (Sn 59) and Noel Stephens (St A 59). Both pairs were two down.
The afternoon singles were not so close. Henry Fray carded a gross 71 on the Old Course - taking both prizes (Scratch Salver and Handicap Cup) and cutting his handicap by two. Peter Pentecost (St A 73) came a gallant second with 36 points, only nine behind!
These golfing highlights were inevitably superseded by an excellent lunch. A great day and thank you to everyone for coming.
Final word: 'Southern Meeting' only refers to the location being south of Oundle, so all are welcome.
2018 OLD PUPILS SILVER SALVER
By Nick Whalley (C 96)
Despite a strong showing across the board, for the third year running we again fell one short of recapturing the Old Pupils Silver Salver at Luffenham Heath in April.
The day saw some consistent performances and good golf, but in the end we lost out to the Old Stamfordians by six points.
My thanks to the whole team for their efforts: Joss Cheatle (G 00), David Hutchinson (G 79), Andrew Lightowler (LS 97) and Richard Harris (Lx 91). Another valiant effort; until next year.
2018 PUBLIC SCHOOLS MIDLANDS MEETING
By James Aston (St A 92)
The new format of the Public Schools Midlands Meeting in June this year disagreed with the Oundle team, who recorded a sub-standard score and so failed to trouble the leaderboard.
On the plus side, the Bloody Marys over breakfast (which may have affected the side’s morning performance!) and a lunch lubricated by the Little Aston Club’s claret resulted in much hilarity.
This had a positive effect on the afternoon pairing of Fred Domellof (Lx 76) and Joss Cheatle (G 00), who managed 27 Stableford points over 15 holes to come second in The Malvern Salvers (best net foursomes Stableford score) – an
impressive effort.
OOGS: Joss Cheatle & James Aston, Nick Copestick (Ldr
69) & Peter Pentecost (St A 73), Fredrik Domellof & Bob Ellis (D 65), Nick Cheatle (G 63) & David Aston (St A 55).
2017/18 OOGS NORTHERN AREA
By Robert Blackburn (Sc 73)
In the 2018 Joint Schools Weekend at Woodhall Spa GC we had very limited numbers representing the OOs.
The number of entries per school is unlimited, but it is only the best four scores per school that count towards the Birkdale Bucket.
Mike Banks (Ldr 74), Brian Burrows (D 61), Nick Wilson (N 74) and I represented OOGS, and I am pleased to say that despite the lack of players and the snow, we finished mid-table out of eight schools.
In 2017 we played four friendly matches against other schools, losing to Sedbergh, beating Uppingham and halving with Giggleswick and Worksop.
The following players represented the society: James Aston (St A 92), Mike Banks, Brian Burrows, Robert Blackburn, Richard Ellis (Sn 86), Bob Harrap (B 68), Jeremy Horsell (Sc 70), Richard Law (Sn 79), David McCartney (Lx 80), Martin Monnickendam (N 77), David Thomson (S 65), Nigel Ward (Sc 79) and Nick Wilson.
In 2018 we have played two fixtures to date, losing to Sedbergh and beating Uppingham, so a similar pattern to last year.
The Northern Area is always looking for new members (particularly leavers after 1990) to play for the OOs in our friendly matches against other schools and represent us at Woodhall Spa in the Birkdale Bucket. If you would like to play, please contact me on my mobile (07775 893591).
MATCHES
OOGS lost to Oundle Staff
By Martin Jinks (D 85)
Diary clashes meant the OO team was down on numbers for the annual match against the School staff last August, but we remained high on quality and enjoyed a very good afternoon’s golf. However, despite some good performances, we suffered a narrow loss.
Many thanks to Shane Dodd (Sn 74), Sam Markillie (St A 66), Nick Cheatle (G 63), Joss Cheatle (G 00), Guy Beresford (B 81) and Richard Matthews (D 66) for taking part.
OOGS 6 Old Bedfordians 6
By Brian Bowser (Sn 71)
Sadly, our long-standing skipper, Roy Nicholson (St A 65), had captain’s commitments at Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, but due to his excellent planning, the match against Old Bedfordians at Royal Worlington in March went without a hitch.
Everybody paid, the lunch was delicious, the weather stayed dry and the only possible blot on the horizon might have been the score.
However, although the morning was lost 41⁄2-11⁄2, the
afternoon was won 41⁄2-11⁄2, resulting in an honourable half –
which just proves that Oundle lunched better than Bedford
(again), aided by Kümmel! www
