2017 QE CORONATION SCRATCH TOURNAMENT
By Richard Pentecost (St A 05)
On the third weekend in September last year an Old Oundelian team ventured north of the border for the annual trip to Edinburgh for the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Trophy at Royal Burgess.
We had a slightly different look to our team than we had in previous years, with some new guys experiencing OO golf.
Making their debuts in the QE were Seb Tusa (S 13), Sam Stocks (Ldr 15) and Ed Monroe (G 11). Jack Ireson (L 15) was playing in his third QE, so Will Butler (L 08) and Richard Pentecost were the veterans.
The trip started with a practice round on the Friday afternoon at Royal Burgess. This was a good opportunity for the guys who hadn’t played the course before to see it and for the rest of us to re-familiarise ourselves with it. After the round and with a late tee time on the Saturday, the team decided to enjoy the social side of Edinburgh.
In the first round we came up against Watsons, who are always very strong and proved so again.
Pentecost and Ireson went off in the top match, but Watsons were too good and won a close match that finished on the 17th.
The second pair of Monroe and Butler fared better. They played extremely well and managed to get a win.
The back match had Stocks and Tusa playing together. Unfortunately, the Watson third pair got off to a fast start and managed to hold on for victory.
Despite the fact that we weren’t able to progress in the competition, it was another great weekend up in Edinburgh. I hope that those playing their first QEs will play in many more. It is also a great catch-up with familiar faces who are there year on year.
2017 DENHAM BOWL
By Richard Pentecost (St A 05)
The Old Oundelian Golfing Society (OOGS) were once again invited to play in the Denham Bowl last September.
The Bowl is the flagship competition of Denham Golf Club and is always such a great day. Twenty-two golfing societies and clubs from all over the country take part, with a black-tie dinner on the Friday night before the golf on the Saturday and the traditional lunch between the two rounds.
A four-man team of Richard Pentecost, Richard Harris (Lx 91), Will Kendall (S 02) and Peter Pentecost (St A 73) represented the OOGS in the most difficult form of golf – 36 holes of scratch medal foursomes.
We played with a strong team from Rye, who were great
company for the day. As is frequently the case, the teams’ morning scores were better than those for the afternoon. Neither pair scored as they should have and so we finished in the middle of the pack.
Congratulations to the Denham Artisans, who were victorious this year, breaking the Denham A team’s run of victories.
I would like to thank Richard, Will and Peter very much for playing. It is always great fun and I look forward to next year.
2017 OOGS ANNUAL WEEKEND
By James Aston (St A 92)
The OOGS Annual Weekend in October commences with a committee meeting and dinner at The George Hotel in Stamford on the Friday, with the dinner open to any OOGS members and a fine way to kick off proceedings.
Golf on the Saturday at Luffenham Heath was attended by 25 members, playing singles in the morning, with an option of teaming up for a foursomes competition in the afternoon.
Sunday golf is now fourballs rounded off with a short prizegiving and then lunch, allowing a prompt return home.

OOGS Vice-President David Aston (St A 55) advises Jago Phuchanaraksakurl (St A 18) on the 16th fairway at Luffenham
Heath during the OOGS Annual Weekend last October. The advice clearly worked, as Jago went on to par the 16th and birdie the 18th!
