OOGS beat Old Uppinghamians
By Nick Copestick (Ldr 69)
Always an enjoyable warm-up fixture for the band of Halford Hewitt supporters, this year we managed to win back the Copestick-Gotla Trophy with a couple of decisive wins at Rye in April.
OOGS: Peter Pentecost (St A 73) & Nick Copestick, Fred Domellof (Lx 76) & Ed Dove (C 85), James Aston (St A 92) & Seb Tusa (S 13), William King (C 66) & David Simons (Sn 59), Bob Ellis (D 65) & Tris Tusa (S 16).
OOGS 1 Old Haileyburians 3
By Guy Beresford (B 81)
We lost at Denham in early May to the Old Haileyburians, who, after we had won for the first two years of the fixture, flattered us by turning out a very strong team.
We fought hard and lost two of our matches on the 17th or 18th, with our point being secured by Guy Beresford and Al Stuart (B 84) in their first meeting since December 1981.
We are determined to return to winning ways next year.
OOGS beat Old Uppinghamians
By Joss Cheatle (G 00)
Ambitiously, both sides set about raising 10 players to relaunch this fixture and play for the newly-minted Minnie/Edmundson Trophy at the traditional venue of Luffenham Heath Golf Club in July.
Oundle, with the much larger society, easily managed to recruit 10, but Uppingham only raised six, which fell to five on the day and so required thinking caps to keep the day entertaining yet competitive.
Two OOGS on 3/4 handicap against one OU on full handicap sounds like a walkover for Oundle, but produced some interesting results in excellent weather.
Our first pairing played well, won comfortably and also got round the back nine in a little over an hour, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Our middle groups faced stiffer competition, which only left the rear gunners to secure a whitewash. Thankfully, they did, finishing the match 21 up.
Post-match refreshments were enjoyed by all, along with an
SAILING
By Ed Stevenson (Sc 02)
It has been another eventful year for the OO Sailing Club. We
participated in the Arrow Trophy over the weekend of 14th and 15th October 2017. This is a regatta sailed in Sunsail F40s from Cowes. A lot of new faces joined the crew this year and it was good to see several new members of the team making such a large contribution to the sailing, as well as to the social aspect of the weekend. Special thanks must go to Rodney
excellent meal. The trophy is still to be presented, but hopefully the fixture will run for many years to come. Thanks to all involved.
OOGS: Jack Ireson (LS 15), Fredrik Domellof (Lx 76), Brian Bowser (Sn 71), Richard Ellis (Sn 86), Nigel Hetherington (Lx 65), Nick Cheatle (G 63), Joss Cheatle, Guy Beresford (B 81), Peter Edwards (Sc 73) and Roger Tacq (LS 69).
OOGS lost to The Grocers
By Guy Beresford (B 81)
The Grocers’ match at New Zealand GC in May was again an OO fest, with 21 OOs in total taking part in a fabulous day.
A match within a match pitted ‘Grocers who are Governors of the School and OOs’ against ‘Grocers who are Governors of the School but not OOs’ and resulted in large numbers of people switching teams.
As it turned out, pretty much all the OOGS players who were seconded to the Grocers’ team on the day won and nearly all the Grocers OOs who came across to the OOGS team lost!
I can explain in more detail to anyone suffering from insomnia, but the end result was a comfortable win for the Grocers.
In the afternoon the teams were mixed up, with each pair playing for the Knight Salvers, which were won this year by Ed Pickard (G 82), representing the Grocers, and Guy Beresford, representing OOGS, with 35 points.
OOGS 1 Old Uppinghamians 1
By Guy Beresford (B 81)
In early July we had an honourable draw at Royal Eastbourne against an Old Uppinghamians team, both groups being extended parts of their respective teams' cricket tours to Sussex.
We hope this will expand and become an annual fixture, even if stretching the definition of the ‘London’ region.
OOGS: Guy Beresford, Richard Hall (Sc 93), Jago Phuchanaraksakurl (St A 18) and Al Stuart (B 84).
OOGS 2 Old Stamfordians 2
By Colin Ringrose (St A 65)
OOGS drew with Old Stamfordians on a very hot and dry day at Luffenham Heath Golf Club in July, when the rough was deep and unforgiving.
Bruce Alexander (Sn 69) & Roger Tacq (LS 69) and Brian Bowser (Sn 71) & Joss Cheatle (G 00) won their matches, but Roger Winson (S 60) & Colin Ringrose and Mike Winson (S 64) & Peter Fox-Andrews (N 64) lost theirs.
Dodd (Sn 75) for acting as skipper and to Simon Blackburn (Ldr 98) for leading the social side of the weekend with his customary jollity and on-board catering prowess.
Unfortunately, the racing was not hugely successful for the OO crew this year, finishing in 19th place (out of 20) despite a lot of promise at times. We are unsure why we were not able to capitalise on some good starts and slick manoeuvres but had a lot of fun nonetheless. We will be back next year to redeem ourselves.
The OO team also competed against the School on 23rd
