Tom Cooper-Jones: After studying Chinese at Edinburgh and in Beijing, I've so far resisted the urge to return to the Far East, first doing a spell at Deloitte and now working in a start- up hedge fund. For now, I can often be found at the Catford Wanderers Lawn Tennis Club (every bit as serious as it sounds!) before a likely return abroad.
Robert Emberson: After an enjoyable four years at Cambridge reading Geology, I moved to Berlin and a PhD studying Landslides – a great opportunity to travel and experience living in Europe’s most interesting city (sorry London!). I’ve stayed on the road since, with a year in Vancouver as a freelance writer, and I’m now a visiting scientist at NASA in Washington DC, working on disaster mitigation around the world. Outside of work, I try to find time for mountaineering, travel and marathon running, although I’ll be in DC for a while.
Will Joicey: After leaving Oundle, I spent a year at Cirencester Agricultural College before travelling to Argentina to work as a hunting guide. I returned home for a spell a year later, before doing something similar in Spain. I then decided Australia looked like fun, so I booked a ticket and headed off for an adventure. I spent time there working on various farms and cattle stations, before carrying on to New Zealand. I have been settled here for the last four years and now work full time as a head shepherd on a high-country Merino sheep and Angus station near Omarama on the South Island, where I live with my partner, Bridget.
Ricky Martin: I am a chartered civil engineer with the international contractor, Skanska, whom I joined after graduating from Bristol in 2012. I have worked on several high-profile projects in London, including the roof slab and piles for the new Crossrail station at Paddington and tunnelling under Holloway Prison for National Grid. I was then seconded to Atkins as a structural engineer, working on
some interesting projects in the Middle East and London. I finished my secondment by designing a new 100-metre long, three-span bridge over the A1 between Grafham and Huntingdon as part of the A14 upgrade near Cambridge, which I then went on to build on returning to Skanska, so watch out the next time you pass! I'm now grave-digging and tearing down buildings in preparation for the new HS2 station at Euston in London, and thoroughly enjoying being back in the best city in the world and catching up with a few OOs.
Charlie McCarter: After leaving Oundle, I worked for six months to fund travel across China and India. I then attended Southampton University for four years, when I had an excellent time and attained a 2:1 in Politics and International Relations. I then started at John Lewis and moved on to the internal management training scheme. I am living in London and working as a section manager in events and catering at JL Oxford Street in Central London, and have spent time working in Waitrose and other stores.
Will Parry: After a crashing start and a long lie-down, I eventually made my way to Edinburgh University, where I enjoyed four years, punctuated by many cycle trips around Europe. I then cooked around Scottish lodges before
moving out to Darjeeling in North- East India for two years and managing the Glenburn Tea Estate boutique hotel with my girlfriend. In 2017 I returned to Devon and fell into managing the restaurant at Gara Rock resort, where I am still working. I hope to have my own restaurant up and running by the end of the year.
Harry Proctor: I studied Biological Sciences at Leeds University before securing a sales role with a Leeds- based software company. I spend my working days travelling between Japan, India, Europe and the US, visiting pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetic organisations, and helping them meet the regulations that govern their products. I'm currently planning the wedding to my fiancée, Sarah, in January 2019. We've been living in the North-East for the past five years while she studied to become a doctor and will be moving back to the Leeds/Harrogate area in the coming months.
Andrew Riddell: After completing a ski season, a mapping project for Google Earth in Africa and then a job in Namibia, I read Rural Studies at Newcastle University. I graduated and moved to Edinburgh, where I have now worked for five years at Strutt & Parker, where I am now an associate director for the city residential team.
