Sangwin (Ldr 56), James Ellis (Sn 63), James Macfarlane (S 61), Andrew Gordon-Stewart (Sc 57), Richard Waters (Sc 59), Brian Trent (Sc 58), Robin Apthorpe (S 59), Michael Hellier (S 60), Chris Shepley (Sc 59), Ian Carmichael (Sn 60), Angus Shaw (Sc 61), Roderick Ashby (Lx 60), Donald Macmillan (Sc 56), Gavin Choyce (N 61), Victor Thomas (Lx 59), Ian McCormick (Sn 59), David Llewellyn (Sc 59) and Christopher. Last minute apologies for absence came from Roger Staniforth (N 60) and Anthony Fleming-Smith (Lx 59). The next luncheon will be held on Wednesday 12th December 2018 at the RAC, but due to demand places are limited. Christopher also had a most enjoyable lunch and catch-up after some 50+ years with Nigel Napier Andrews (Sc 59), who was passing through London on his way back to Canada. Due to ancestors passing away, he now has an interest in a property in South Yorkshire. New Zealand-based OO Neil Hollebone (Sn 60) also featured in Christopher’s calendar when he made a visit to the Southern Hemisphere. Neil still appears on the cricket field as an umpire and also manages to keep food on the table by catching trout in one of New Zealand’s beautiful rivers.
Lance Ashworth (G 82) has seen a number of OOs through the year, many connected to OO tennis, which he runs. In addition, Lance has spent a number of enjoyable days/evenings with Theo Barry (N 82), including at the second day of the Pakistan Test at Lord’s. Most of the day seemed to be
spent in an alcoholic haze. He regularly sees Jeremy Gordon (B 82) and Will Massey (B 82) in and around Lincoln’s Inn Fields, but the annual golf match they all play with Guy Beresford had to be postponed until the autumn. Lance is also frequently in contact with Simon Thornton (G 82), who continues to live in Guernsey. Early Wednesday mornings are spent on the tennis courts of Lincoln’s Inn with twins Al Goldingham (Ldr 99) and Mike Goldingham (Ldr 99), admiring the quality of their ground strokes while hovering at the net. Lance’s brothers, Miles Ashworth (Sn 78) and Guy Ashworth (St A 79), continue to live in New Zealand and Leamington Spa respectively. Lance’s daughter, Millie Ashworth (K 10), has bought her first house in Olney and is now Director of Operations running 11 pubs. Lance’s eldest son, Charlie Ashworth (G 11), is still in Sheffield working for Hilti, but along with his younger brother, Freddie Ashworth (G 15) – who has just finished his second year at Bristol – is a regular visitor to Lance’s in London.
Sir Michael Pickard (C 51) reports that The Oundle Assassins Cricket XI (1949/50 Oundle teams) met for an incredible 69th reunion in a box at The Oval in May. Present were Richard Botwood (St A 50), Tony Armitage (C 50), Michael Skliros (Sn 52) and Sir Michael Pickard. Regrettably, Dougie Bell (D 49) and Shaharyar Khan (D 52) were unable to join them. Inevitably, after all these years Michael informs me that half the team are no longer with us and since their meeting sadly Freddy Price (Ldr 50) has died.
However, he is pleased to say that the two honorary Assassins, Michael Wates (St A 53) and Andrew Wates (St A 59), were also present and the widows of Michael Massey and Jim Woodhouse attended. Sir Michael would be very interested to know whether any other teams or forms from the School still meet up after so many years.
It was very good to hear from Bob Klaber (G 94), who continues to balance supporting his three children’s ever-expanding sporting exploits with working as a paediatrician and Deputy Medical Director at Imperial Hospital in North-West London, for which he found himself unexpectedly honoured with an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. He is looking forward to a trip to the Palace, most likely in the autumn.
Annabel Thomas (W 00) continues to run Ncn’ean - an organic whisky distillery on the west coast of Scotland. With nearly 900 barrels in the warehouse a year and a half into production, she has been focused on making sure the spirit is of very high quality (it’s a hard job!), but is now looking forward to getting the first ‘botanical spirit’ into the market this summer. Think a whisky-gin hybrid. She has also really enjoyed seeing lots of her year from Oundle at weddings, reunions, in New York and at the local swimming pool!
Andrew Whitaker (Sn 84) continues to live in Putney with his family (although three of the four have started to flee the nest). This year he has met up on a number of occasions with Richard Munro (Sc 84) to discuss property matters and also keeps in contact with Ian Marris (Sn 84) and Richard Rawlins (Sn 84), as well as having the occasional beer or two with Simon Marshall (C 84). Robert Whitaker (Sn 90) and family also live in Putney.
Hugo James (Sc 88) reports that on 5th July there was a 30-year reunion of the 1st VIII from 1988 at Henley Royal Regatta. Simon Burdess (C 89), Dan Hiscocks (Sn 89) and Ed Rose (S 89) did a great job in contacting everybody and arranging the day. They were joined by Alex Heard (St A 88), Matthew James (C 88), Hugo, Ed Stone (St A 88) and Guy Biscoe (C
