BRAINSTORMING
Use it to generate ideas and solutions, find the causes of
problems, to enhance creativity, to allow people to put ideas on
the table without fear of being corrected or challenged and to
raise energy levels. It separates the creation of ideas from the
evaluation activity.
Some additional thoughts:
1. Equipment: Flipchart, coloured pens, post it notes, walls
2. Plan: Define and agree the objective
3. Plan: Clarity in the initial topic or question key – it must
address a specific question and everyone must
understand it
4. It must focus on generating ideas not making decisions
5. Let ideas flow freely with no evaluation –Storm!
6. Be humorous, creative and break out of old patterns –
welcome unusual ideas, the wilder, the better
7. No debating of ideas
8. There are no bad ideas – all ideas are welcome
9. Quantity is the initial goal
10. Discuss each idea to ensure it is understood and then
group ideas into themes
11. Use a voting system/ decision grid/ criteria to agree the
areas with most promise
12. Select the most promising ideas and analyse them further
