An Interview with PI Magazine
Investigator of the Year 2021:
Matt Spaier
By Rod Gagnon
I was able to catch Matthew Spaier and get his insight on how 2022 is
shaping up, as well as what he’s learned for marketing and networking.
If you haven’t heard about Matt, he’s a New York private investigator
that is mostly known to me for being the podcast host of the #1 private
investigator podcast since 2019, and the creator of Investigators-
Toolbox.com. Here are some selected parts of our conversation (with
more to follow in subsequent newsletter issues):
RDG: Matt, I’m glad you’re able to take some time with us. You were
awarded P.I. Magazine’s Investigator of the Year for 2021, which
was fantastic. Congratulations.
Matt: Thank you.
RDG: So, this year we’re trying to see what’s happening in the
investigations world. You have a unique perspective in the fact
that you have your podcasting, you’re a business owner, and
you’re very active in the investigations community. We wanted
to ask you what you saw that worked well last year, coming out
of the pandemic, and what looks like is ramping up.
Matt: To me, in 2021, there was a lot of unexpectedness to it, right?
There was a push for everyone to get back to normal, but we
didn’t know what normal was going to look like. When it came
to conferences and events around the country, the numbers
were smaller than they were before. Some of them happened
during an outbreak, then other variants came out. So, do we
cancel, or do we go forward? There were events that were
canceled. To sum up 2021, everyone had to be flexible. Everyone
had a plan, but you also had to be open to change if things
changed. So, events went live, but had to go virtual, and vice
versa.
