Week 8 hand analysis
Hand 1
Í A 10 9
Remember that with a balanced hand Ì K 8 4
we open notrump with 12-14. With 15- Ë K Q 8 3
19 we open a suit with at least 4 cards in Ê A 9 7
it and unless something startling Í J 8 5 3 Í 4 2
Ì J 5 3 Ì A 10 9 6 2
happens, we rebid notrump.
Ë 10 9 Ë J 6 4 2
Here North rebids 1NT showing 15- Ê J 10 5 2 Ê K 8
17 points and denying 4 spades. South Í K Q 7 6
has an easy raise to game. 16 Ì Q 7
Again, we are in notrumps and so we 3 8 Ë A 7 5

Count our top tricks by power. 3 spades, 1NT 3NT
3 diamonds and 1 club. Total 7. All pass
Add tricks from other sources. We have
1 slow by power in hearts and maybe a trick by position after the lead.
There are possible tricks by length in spades and diamonds. There is a
possible trick by position in clubs if East holds the King by playing small
towards the Queen.
Manage the hand. Assuming a heart lead we must play the ÌQ at trick 1
simply because, if we do not make it now we will never make it. Now we
play the suits in the correct order. First we should try for a 3-3 break in
spades. Then we try for a 3-3 break in diamonds. When neither works we
are nicely placed in the dummy to play a club towards the Queen.
Play. We lose a club, a diamond and a heart. These hands are getting more
difficult and now we must think quite a long way ahead in the planning
stage.
Hand 2
Again East rebids 1NT to show his 15-17 balanced hand. Holding 10
points and therefore knowing that our side holds 25 points between us
West bids the game.
