Chapter 7. From today it is Bridge!

        The differences between the two games.

            Let us examine the differences between the two forms of our game
        (bridge and minibridge).
        ! We decide who is the declarer -
               " In minibridge we start by announcing our points and the
                       side with the most points become the declaring side;
               " In bridge we have an auction and the side winning the
                       auction become the declaring side and the declarer is the
                       player who bid the denomination first (see sample auction
                       below). In the auction we bid to buy the contract. Yes, the
                       declaring side may have fewer points than the defenders!
        !      We lead
               "       After we have seen the dummy in minibridge;
               " Before we have seen the dummy in bridge.
        !      Our possible contracts
               "       In minibridge we have game or part-score;
               " In bridge we can contract for any number of tricks from 7
                       to 13. Further, there is an extra bonus for bidding and
                       making a small slam (12 tricks) and a bigger bonus for
                       bidding and making a grand slam (13 tricks). There is also a
                       concept of vulnerability (an historic things that works) and
                       the bonus for bidding and making game is higher.
                       Vulnerable the bonus is 500 against 300 non-vulnerable.
                       However, if you fail to make your contract you lose
                       100/trick vulnerable against 50/trick non-vulnerable. For
                       more about the score look on the back of the cards in a
                       bidding box (or online).

        The Auction.

            So, all we need to do is to see how the auction works and we can play
        bridge. (If only it were as simple as that). Now we need to look at the rules
        for bidding -

                                          69
   78   79   80   81   82   83   84   85   86   87   88
