this time West felt that her hand was not North East South West
strong enough and so said "Pass". - - - Pass
                                                   1Ì 2Ê 2Ë 2Í
Notice, just like a real auction, this does Pass Pass 4Ì Pass
                                                   Pass Pass
not bar West from bidding later.

North opened the bidding by saying 1Ì.
East wanted to bid his clubs which are lower ranking than hearts and
so had to bid them at the two level.

South was then able to show diamonds at the same level as they
        outrank clubs.

Similarly West was able to bid 2Í because this is the highest ranking
        suit.

South, had heard enough. He did not bid just 3Ì because he thought
game would be available if hearts were trumps and so jumped to game
        with 4Ì.

The last bid was made by South which makes North/South the
declaring side. However, North bid hearts first and so (s)he becomes the
        declarer.

East must lead now before seeing the dummy.

        The language of bidding.

The language of bidding is a complex one and, indeed, there are many
languages. The language that you are going to be taught is based on an
        English system called “Acol”.
