Bidding boxes.
These days at most clubs we do not speak out loud to make a call. We
use a bidding box. There are two reasons for this -
1. When we are bidding we are allowed to pass information to
partner by the bid that we make and not the way we make it. This
means we cannot use inflection to imply strength or doubt. The
bidding box stops this for the most part because,
to make a bid we simply take the appropriate set
of cards out of the box and place them, facing
partner, in front of us.
2. As the auction progresses we can see how the
auction has gone and this reduces the need to
repeat the auction.
When we bid we take the appropriate card out of the bidding box and
ALL of the cards behind it and place the call in front of us where it
remains for the whole of the auction period. The auction period ends
when the opening lead is made (face down).
The bidding box comes in two sections -
• Front of box - The most important card here is the green “Pass”.
We will pick up how to use the others as we go along;
• Back of box - Here there are all of the possible bids from 1Ê to
7NT. Notice that if you do not know how many you score for
your contract look on the back of the card for the answer.
