Dr. Adam Stivala, ‘16 is a board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and
Associate Professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of
Hawaiʻi, where he is dedicated to training the next generation of physicians. He
currently serves as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at The Queen's Medical
Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, one of the state's premier medical institutions, where he
works within the Family Treatment Center providing specialized psychiatric care to
children and adolescents.
Dr. Stivala's path to medicine is one defined by versatility, service, and an
unwavering commitment to his patients. Before pursuing his MD at the American
University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, where he graduated in 2016, he
earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Miami Miller School of
Medicine with academic honors, and a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Marketing
from Syracuse University, where he was a varsity letter winner and member of the
Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Following his graduation from AUC, Dr. Stivala completed his General Psychiatry Residency at Trinitas Regional
Medical Center and Rutgers University School of Medicine in Elizabeth, New Jersey, with a focus on neurology,
internal medicine, and inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services. He subsequently completed a Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at The Queen's Medical Center and the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns
School of Medicine, specializing in community-based child and adolescent psychiatric services.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Stivala has served in a wide range of clinical settings, including community health
centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and the county corrections system, reflecting his commitment to reaching some
of the most vulnerable and underserved patient populations. He served as Staff Psychiatrist at the Waianae Coast
Comprehensive Health Center, one of Hawaii's leading community health systems, and as Locum Psychiatrist at
Hawaii State Hospital and Santa Rita Jail in California.
A proud veteran, Dr. Stivala served as a Major in the United States Army Reserves Medical Corps as a psychiatrist
from 2016 to 2025, completing his service at the rank of O-4. His military training included the Basic Officer
Leadership Course and the Captain's Career Course, further deepening his leadership capabilities and his
dedication to service above self.
Dr. Stivala holds board certifications in both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry through the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is licensed to practice medicine in Hawaii, New Jersey, Florida,
and New York. He is also NeuroStar TMS
Certified and holds additional training from the Royal College of Surgeons. He is fluent in Spanish, allowing him to
serve diverse communities with cultural fluency and compassion.
A proud AUC alumnus, Dr. Stivala is perhaps equally well known on campus for his role, alongside his classmates,
in restoring the Sint Maarten/St. Martin anthem to AUC celebrations, a contribution he describes as one of his
proudest achievements from his time on the island.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Stivala enjoys running, and describes his other hobbies as eating and sleeping, which, as
any physician will tell you, are two skills that must be mastered early in training.
