P. 20
Adding and subtracting fractions
To add or subtract fractions, the denominator of the fractions should be the same. If the denominator is not the same, multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.
Tip: Multiply and divide the numerator and denominator by a number so that the denominators of the two fractions are the same.
Worked Example 9
Find4 +4 57
Solution:
Here, the denominator of the two fractions is different.
To make the denominator the same, multiply the first fraction by 7 and the second fraction by 5.
4×7 = 28 5×7 35
4×5 = 20 7×5 35
Sum=28 +20 =48 35 35 35
Division of fractions
When dividing fractions, invert the fraction you’re dividing by and then carry out multiplication.
Worked Example 10
Find 9 ÷3 55 11
Solution:
3 Here, you’re dividing by 11.
So, invert and continue with multiplication.
9 ×11=3 55 3 5
