He covers his ears with his
hands, turns his back to her,
and starts singing “Kumbaya”
as loud as he can.
MRS. DREYFUSS
“Belong with your people”? I’ll tell you who your
people are: our two children, and your sister Ida,and
my brother Morrie, and the cousins, and their
children. And the people in our building, our
neighbors, who would do anything for us . . . Can you
believe this, officers? What am I going to do with
him? Can you get him to shut up?
RAY
I’ll see what I can do, ma’am . . .
He steps into the cell and
leads Dreyfuss, who is still
cuffing his ears and singing,
out of it.
It’s time for a timeout, Albert.
They exit.
MRS. DREYFUSS
I don’t know what I’m going to do with him . . .
BOB
What can you tell us about your husband, Mrs.
Dreyfuss?
MRS. DREYFUSS
You mean that will explain this insanity? I doubt I
can. He’s been a devoted family man and employee his
whole adult life. He’s always been interested in
current events and concerned about the problems of the
world, but since the election I don’t know what’s
gotten into him. He obsesses day and night about our
new president. He’s like a different man . . .
BOB
Can you think of any reason for this change? Something
in his past that’s bubbled up recently? Something in
his current life that’s changed recently?
