Simulation of Nocturnal Urban Heat Islands’ Intensity Using GIS

Abstract: Due to urban geometry’s role in the energy balance‘s changes, it is considered to be one of the
most important factors of the urban heat island‘s formation. The aspect ratio index defined by the ratio of
the average height of buildings to the average width of the street in urban canyons is one of the most
important indicators of urban geometry in the modeling of urban heat island. Oke’s model is the most
famous models to calculate the urban heat island’s intensity based on geometric indices. Since this model
requires descriptive and spatial analysis, the use of geospatial information systems is inevitable. In this
study, the urban geometry’s effect on the nocturnal urban heat island’s intensity has been investigated
in12 urban canyons using GIS. The results show canyons’ intensity with higher aspect ratio values is
higher compared to canyons with lower aspect ratio values.
