DAY 2 SUMMER IN

            FEB. 22, 2019 SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE!

We, (Linda Byers, Judy Romanenkov and I) are now in of Buenos Aires without thinking of Evita, a heroine for
Buenos Aires, Argentina. (BA is the Paris of South America) many, usually the empowered poor, but her detractors
where we will have overnight stay while transiting to view her differently.
Ushuaia early the next day. Staying in the Recoleta
district, an upper middle class neighborhood with lots
of high-end shops, theaters, restaurants and embassies
in well maintained colonial buildings previously owned
by the landed gentry. We took an afternoon tour of the
city and passed the checker-board designed streets with
buildings of the same height. The city has not changed
much, it’s still a cafe-cultured-city, like many in Europe.
I loved that we twice passed the Opera House and the
widest Avenue in the world, El Nueve de Julio flanked on
each side by many flowering trees, including ceibo that
blossoms into colorful flowers, their national flower.

The Cinco de Mayo Plaza is the center of the most
important buildings and monuments (think of a larger
version of Civic Center in SF) including the pink building
called Casa Rosada, the Presidential Palace which owes
its paint colors from the mixture of powdered lime and
ox blood. The balcony of this Palace is well-known for
the controversial Evita Peron and her famous political
and rousing speeches where she addressed the Peronist
supporters. Whether you like her or not, no one can think
