32 A Salute to KMAland Healthcare Heroes KMAland 2021

                                                      Wellness Center

he Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the complete shutdown of our
SMC Wellness gym for two months. During this time, our staff
Tcontinued to write at-home programs for our clients, remodeled
our entire gym space, and our SMC Wellness
Center staff helped to support other areas of
the hospital. Even though being closed was
not what any of our team wanted, the op-
portunity to work in other areas of the hos-
pital was both eye opening and extremely
rewarding. It gave our SMC Wellness team
members a different perspective of what our
fellow co-workers do and how important
everyone’s job throughout our entire facil-
ity is to deliver amazing patient care. We
re-opened our doors in mid-May with many
new guidelines to follow. We are extremely
thankful to be open and continue to serve
our clients despite Covid-19 negatively af-
fecting our membership numbers. As more
people start to get their vaccinations we are
seeing our numbers increase and we cannot
wait for the day that we can return to nor-
                                      mal!

                                                                 Clinic

he rapid spread and uncertainty of COVID created challenges
for the Shenandoah Medical Center Clinic. Facing shortages
Tof personal protective equipment, potential exposure to the
virus, fear of brining the virus home to family members, and the real-
ity of losing colleagues, friends, and family members to the disease all
while continuing to successfully treat non-COVID patients and main-
tain personal responsibilities greatly impacted staff. Despite these
challenges, the SMC Clinic staff pulled together as a team to develop
strategies to safely treat all patients and protect staff from potential
exposure. Donations from staff members and the community provided
us the extra PPE we needed for our staff and additional masks for pa-
tients. These PPE donations were greatly appreciated and provided a
safe environment for everyone. The SMC Clinic team demonstrated
