Namibian Fishing Industry – Basic Facts
          Fishing has been a thriving activity of the Namibian coast for well over 100 years
          (MFMR, 2008).

          This sector is a major employer of labour as depicted from the Ministry of
          Fisheries and Marine Resources statistics.

          The fishing industry plays a vital role in the economy, contributing around 7% to

          the  GDP  (MFMR,  2008).  In  2005,  the  sector  contributed  US$   372.2  million  to
          GDP,  compared  to  only  US$  97.8  million  in  1996  (MFMR,  2008).  The  value  of
          exports now is approximately six times greater than at independence
