Long Arm Cast
The long ar m cast provides immobilization from the upper ar m to the hand,
encompassing the elbow joint. This t ype of cast restricts forear m rotation and
elbow motion.
Indications: Long ar m casts are indicated for forear m fractures (e.g., both-bone
fractures of the radius and ulna), elbow fractures, and elbow dislocations
requiring immobilization. They are also used postoperatively in cases where
elbow stabilit y is a concer n LCour t-Brown & McQueen, 2016M.
Application Steps:
1. Position the ar m in 90 degrees of elbow flexion, ensuring a neutral forear m
position.
2. Apply the stockinette and padding, taking care to cushion bony prominences
like the olecranon and epicondyles.
3. Star t wrapping the casting material at the hand and progress proximally,
covering the elbow and ex tending to the upper ar m.
4. Ensure the cast is molded to maintain the elbowʼs functional position while
providing stabilit y.
5. Check for proper fit and patient comfor t, ensuring no areas of excessive
pressure.
