Sugar Tong Splint
The sugar-tong splint is a versatile immobilization device that encases the
forear m and elbow in a U-shaped configuration.
Indications: I t is commonly used for temporar y stabilization of forear m fractures
(e.g., distal radius fractures) and elbow injuries. The splint prevents forear m
pronation and supination while allowing for swelling LCour t-Brown & McQueen,
2016M.
Application Steps:
1. Position the ar m with the elbow at 90 degrees and the wrist in neutral.
2. Apply the stockinette and padding from the mid-upper ar m to the hand,
ensuring full coverage.
3. Place the sugar-tong splint material around the forear m and elbow, ex tending
from the dorsal hand to the volar aspect of the forear m.
4. Secure the splint with an elastic bandage, ensuring it is snug but not over ly
tight to accommodate swelling.
5. Educate the patient on splint care and signs of complications, such as
increased pain or numbness.
