3.5.4 Long Leg Cast





            Patient Prep aration
            Prep ar ing a p atient's skin pr ior to the applic ation of an or thopedic fracture c ast is crucial to ensure proper
            hygiene, reduce the r isk of infection, and provide a comfor table fit. Here are the general steps to prep are the skin
            before applying a c ast:
                  Removing jewelr y from the affected limb pr ior to the applic ation of a f iberglass c ast for the lower
                  ex tremit y helps to ensure p atient comfor t, proper c ast f itting, and effective he aling while reducing the
                  r isk of complic ations dur ing the tre atment and recover y process.

                  Cle an the skin: Gentl y cle an the are a around the fracture site using mild so ap and water or an
                  antiseptic solution. This step helps to remove dir t, debr is, and b acter ia from the skin, reducing the r isk
                  of infection.


                  Dr y the skin: Pat the skin dr y with a cle an towel or gauze. Make sure the skin is completel y dr y before
                  proceeding, as moisture c an inter fere with the adhesion of the c ast mater ials and promote the growth
                  of b acter ia.

                  Assess the skin: Examine the skin for any signs of infection, open wounds, or skin ir r itation. If there
                  are any concer ns, consul t with the he al thc are professional responsible for the p atient's c are.

                  Appl y a skin b ar r ier (if necessar y): In some c ases, a skin b ar r ier may be used to protect the skin from
                  ir r itation or maceration. This could be a moisture b ar r ier cre am or spray, which c an help prevent skin
                  bre akdown c aused by prolonged exposure to moisture.


                  If the p atient has excessive hair, tr im lightl y with clippers (avoid shaving, as micro-abrasions c an le ad

                  Position the limb: Proper l y position the p atient's limb in the desired position for c asting: L1MPlace the
                  p atient in a supine position on an examination table or specialized c asting table; L2M Ensure the injured
