Patient Prep aration
Prep ar ing a p atient's skin pr ior to the applic ation of an or thopedic fracture c ast is crucial to ensure proper
hygiene, reduce the r isk of infection, and provide a comfor table fit. Here are the general steps to prep are the skin
before applying a c ast:
Removing jewelr y from the affected limb pr ior to the applic ation of a f iberglass c ast for the lower
ex tremit y helps to ensure p atient comfor t, proper c ast f itting, and effective he aling while reducing the
r isk of complic ations dur ing the tre atment and recover y process.
Cle an the skin: Gentl y cle an the are a around the fracture site using mild so ap and water or an
antiseptic solution. This step helps to remove dir t, debr is, and b acter ia from the skin, reducing the r isk
of infection.
Dr y the skin: Pat the skin dr y with a cle an towel or gauze. Make sure the skin is completel y dr y before
proceeding, as moisture c an inter fere with the adhesion of the c ast mater ials and promote the growth
of b acter ia.
Assess the skin: Examine the skin for any signs of infection, open wounds, or skin ir r itation. If there
are any concer ns, consul t with the he al thc are professional responsible for the p atient's c are.
Appl y a skin b ar r ier (if necessar y): In some c ases, a skin b ar r ier may be used to protect the skin from
ir r itation or maceration. This could be a moisture b ar r ier cre am or spray, which c an help prevent skin
bre akdown c aused by prolonged exposure to moisture.
If the p atient has excessive hair, tr im lightl y with clippers (avoid shaving, as micro-abrasions c an le ad
to ir r itation or infection).Be sure to get the p atient's consent before doing so.
Position the limb: Proper l y position the p atient's limb in the desired position for c asting: L1MPlace the
p atient in a supine position on an examination table or specialized c asting table; L2M Ensure the injured
leg is full y suppor ted on a p added sur face, with the knee in slight flexion L5]10 degrees). This helps
maintain joint positioning and prevents undue stiffness after c ast removal; L3) the ankle should be in a
neutral position (to prevent foot drop).
Once the p atient's skin is cle an, dr y, and proper l y assessed, you c an proceed with appl ying the
stockinette, p adding, and c asting mater ial according to the he al thc are professional's instructions.
Remember, it's essential to consul t with a he al thc are professional to ensure proper technique and c are for the
p atient's specific needs.
