3.6 Posterior Rigid Splint: Intro
A poster ior r igid splint is a non-circumferential immobilization device used pr imar ily in acute settings for
temporar y stabilization of lower ex tremit y injur ies. Common indic ations include:
• Acute fractures of the tibia, f ibula, or ankle before definitive c asting
• Severe ankle sprains with ex tensive soft tissue damage
• Achilles tendon ruptures requir ing immobilization in plantar flexion
• Postoperative immobilization for foot and ankle surger y
• Management of severe lower leg contusions with swelling r isk
