Chapter 3
The first investigation
“There are a lot of fingerprints here. ” Jameson says with a peculiar kind of
optimism. He looks at his old friend and colleague, the police chief.
Vince Owen is not in a good mood, he discreetly rubs his red-rimmed eyes; no
further comments should be uttered from the team at this moment. Not that
they’d even dare to say anything rude, but just in general. He wants his team to
appear ready for the task ahead – with him at the top of course. No nonsense.
Vince Owen is been sleep deprived, but fortunately it is now rare for him to be
awakened at night. In the good old days, he would have enjoyed it, but not
anymore, he has become too comfortable, just like the other old boys from the
South Station-team. It has more than ten years since he wanted to get away from
London; while the children were still living at home.
He had had his fears; the hirsute ones could cause problems. As a police officer
in London East, he knew how the hippies, racial turbulence, crazy trends from
America amongst other things, were slowly making his job worse and worse.
When he found out that there were vacancies in Brighton, he had applied to
leave. He had been given the position of police inspector, but fate had it, that the
old police chief had trouble his heart, and then had to retire. Brighton was then
suddenly been without a boss, and Vince was promoted to chief of police. Last
night, he had been sitting on the edge of the bed in his white underwear, finding
his pyjamas, when the phone suddenly rang. Nowadays it is very exceptional for
the phone to ring in the evening. He had to drive to the station and get an
overview of the situation. Therefore, he had first returned to his wife and his bed,
around 2 AM that same night. He had to get back in the office again at seven the
following morning.
Now it is the first time he has seen the crime scene with his own eyes that has
caused so much mischief.
"Hmm well, this just need to be analysed as soon as possible, so we can get a
sense of what this is and why," he replies, clenching his eyes, as he always does
when he tries to figure out something he perceives as complicated.
