Visit at Wilkens
The midday sun blinded Dieter for a moment. He considered hailing a cab, but he
needed the walk. The food from The Golden Pheasant filled his stomach well.
At the time he had finished eaten lunch, the center of the city was transformed
into an even greater inferno of cars and buses, struggling for the cramped space
on the roads. Dust and soil from countless building projects hung in the air, like a
quilt over the city, and as late spring offered almost summery temperatures, it
was a sweaty affair to move on foot through Hamburg's busy center.
He was aware that Dieter should be paid well. But exactly how many D-Marks it
would be, he wasn’t aware of. Judging on Wilkens’ outspoken tone on the phone,
it was a not an insignificant amount.
He discreetly checked if the gun was still in the inner pocket. So far, everything
went smoothly. He had sold a total of four paintings to Wilkens, and soon he
received payment for the fifth painting.
He had been responsible for the work when the bunkers were created,
and he justified for himself that it was his merit that the art taxes had ended up
with him and his father.
Still, he could recall some of the faces of the young men, who had been
struggling to build the piles alone with nothing but shovels and hard work. Then
the machines took over, when the work needed to be done quicker. They were
young men of his age, who were executed or sent to an uncertain fate.
Sometimes, the tense atmosphere from that time sneaked completely under his
skin.
In his way, he regarded the place as sacred, although there was something
ghostly about the area, still full of old military equipment. There were a few
worn-out trucks and, of course, the three bunkers, of which he had concentrated
mainly on a single.
