Again, it is difficult to make this knot ‘in hand’ and
so I have shown it wrapped around a see-through
cylinder. Once more we start with a tape around
the top and bottom of the cylinder. This time we
have also added a tape around the middle to help
with viewing the knot as it progresses. Mark the
positions of the eight bights on the top and bottom
tapes. Notice that the lower row of numbers sits
‘between’ the upper row of numbers, i.e., the top
row ‘1’ lies between the bottom row ‘1’ and ‘2’.
After you get the idea of how to approach this kind
of knot, I will introduce you to a kind of shorthand
to enable tying these knots using a similar tubular 1
