                          Butcher Block cutting board care

You may have recently purchased a heavy-duty wood cutting board or been
gifted one. Now, how do you care for it and preserve it for the future? A well-

maintained cutting board can be passed on to generations if you follow these

                                         important maintenance steps.

First you will need to purchase a good neutral oil like mineral oil. It is food

safe and will not go rancid.
With a soft towel apply the oil in the direction of the grain. You will need to

apply five to six coats depending on the wood. Rub the oil on all sides and

allow time for it to dry and absorb in between coats. Let sit overnight. Rub off

any excess oil and store the board on its side. Reapply oil monthly or as

                                                         needed.
Cleaning the board is another important step that must be done correctly to

prolong its life and appearance. Never let the board soak in water or allow it

to sit for long periods of time with liquids on it. This will lead to warping and

possible splitting of the grain. Warm soapy water and a soft sponge is all you

need to clean a cutting board. A solution of diluted bleach is good for

sanitizing after each use. Remember to fully dry the cutting board and store it
on its side to prevent bowing.

Following these steps will ensure your cutting board will give you years of

                                                        service.
