However, Rabeinu Yona cites three different reasons for the obligation to eat on Erev Yom Kippur. According to the second
reason brought below – the nature of eating is completely different.

(9) Regarding other festivals we establish a meal for the joy of the mitzvah, to increase and announce the great
reward of the joy in fulfilling mitzvot, as it states “Now, I have seen your people here, with joy they have donated
to You” (Divrei Hayamim I 29:17), and it says: “[Curses will be upon you] since you did not serve Hashem your
G-d with joy and goodness of heart” (Devarim 28:47). So because there is a fast on Yom Kippur we are obligated
to establish this meal for the joy of the mitzvah [instead] on the eve of Yom Kippur.
This obligation to eat is codified in the Shulchan Aruch:

There is a mitzvah to eat on the eve of Yom Kippur and increase [the amount of food] at our meals. Rema: And
it is forbidden to fast then, even for a fast due to a dream.
