Pictures and Photographs
1. May one be photographed?
a. Daat Kohen – Although there are pious individuals who are stringent, the basic
halacha according to the Shulchan Aruch is that it is permitted. It is preferable
not to take a full body picture.
b. Taz – There are those that are stringent even regarding a headshot.
2. May a person object to others photographing him?
a. Mishneh Halachot – Yes.
b. Chut Shani – No.
Dolls
1. Yechaveh Daat – It is permitted to make them as well as retain them.
2. Chut Shani – It is prohibited to make them but permitted to retain them.
3. Shevet HaLevi – It is prohibited even to retain them.
4. Yalkut Yosef – It is preferable not to buy a complete doll.
Drawing Images to Teach or Study
1. Igrot Moshe – One should prevent a child who has reached the age of chinuch to
draw a picture of the sun or moon.
2. Chut Shani – For purposes such as teaching about Creation it is permitted.
