mahabalipuram
If you are ever looking for a place to get away from
the city, I recommend Mahabalipuram. Also known
as Mamallapuram is a place by the coast where
ancient kings used to rule and built structures of our
culture and heritage. It has many places to explore
such as the Tiger Caves, Lighthouse, The Five Rathas
and Krishna's Butterball. I especially enjoyed
Krishna's Butterball and Lighthouse. Krishna's
Butterball, also known as Vaan Irai Kal in Tamil, is a
gigantic granite boulder resting on a short incline
and weighs about 250 tons! But what is so special
about that? Well, the rock looks like it defies gravity if
you are looking at it from the front, but, if you look at
it from the other side you find out that the major
bulk of its weight is mostly behind which is what
keeps the rock stable. The other interesting place to
visit is the Lighthouse which is 119 feet tall structure.
The structure sits on a granite boulder which gives it
extra height from the sea level and hence is easily
visible to the ships that sail nearby. The structure
was built around the year 1904. The view from the
top of lighthouse is breathtaking. It gives you a good
view of the whole city and beautiful sea.
