               Design Approach

Bernardon will be vigilant to the need for developing
a design that is focused on the health and safety
of the responders. The introduction of transition
zones to provide the sensible means for separating
the apparatus bay entry and exit points from the
“living” areas common to fire and EMS stations will
               be imperative to our focus.

Bernardon will be mindful of speed of response.
We know that planning and design decisions
contribute greatly to reducing the response
delta measured from the time of a call to the
               responders’ on-site presence. Space adjacencies,
clear circulation within the station, adequate
clearances in turnout gear rooms, and apparatus
bays will absolutely improve response time when
proper attention is given. Clearances around
apparatus is important to the swift movement
of fire and EMS personnel and needs to address
the clearances around open doors to apparatus,
locations of mirrors and bumpers, and space
               between bay doors and apparatus.

Bernardon will thoughtfully plan for comfort and
privacy to improve mental health. A fire station
is a mixed-use building that contains storage,
office, recreation, and residential spaces. These
spaces need to be carefully planned to ensure
that transition zones are maintained, speed of
response is improved, and comfort and privacy is
addressed through the critical separations between
active and quiet zones. Comfort needs to be
considered in terms of physical characteristics of
the space including beauty, natural light, color, and
furnishings. The interior spaces should contribute
               to CALM - not chaos.
